If you’re starting out, though, you perhaps don’t want to be reaching for the highest heights right away. Wainwrights such as England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, and the infamous ridge of Helvellyn can be left for another day. For now, why not warm up and ease yourself into it with these easy Wainwright walks? They’re the perfect Lake District walks for beginners! Alfred Wainwright documented the 214 ‘official’ peaks, and to summit all 214 fells is considered the ultimate peak bagging of the Lake District. Almost as high is Fairfield (2863 feet) and the big attraction here is the Fairfield Horseshoe, a high ridge walk of some 11.5 miles. If you’re bagging Wainwrights, this route takes in eight of them in all and the walk can be done from our door. The route includes Heron Pike and Dove Crag and is a big favourite, especially in summer with the longer daylight hours. And that would be a real shame because the 59 Walk the Wainwrights walks we have selected visit some of the truly loveliest spots in the Lake District. Places where you should take time to linger and take in the stunning scenery. Places where perhaps you will get a little insight into what drew Alfred Wainwright himself to the area over and over again.

I wish I’d had this book when I first started out! The trouble with not intending to bag wainwrights is the chances are there’s walks done which haven’t been efficient for gaining the most summits, however amazing the routes might have been.
